Triggered by a rising international competition and an increasing cost pressure, avoiding risks has become a major concern for industrial companies. Particularly for small companies, collaboration in virtual enterprises is a promising approach to reduce risks and to ensure their competitiveness.

The concept of the Virtual Factory aims to support the setup of such collaborations. Experiences in applying this concept show that there is still some potential left in adapting it regarding the ability to handle the increasing complexity in collaborations. This paper shows an approach to extend the concept of the Virtual Factory to cope with this increasing complexity.
